life, liberty, and the right to fish

listening to the prop 8 hearings today, i was struck by a couple of things. first, at least three or four justices on the california supreme court could not say the word inalienable. nor could anyone present actually define what constitutes an inalienable right.

second, hearing a member of the court say that "a justice's vote last year in favor of gay marriage does not necessarily mean a vote to strike down prop 8" does not inspire confidence. in me.

finally, once the discussion turned to comparing the right to legally marry the person i love to the right to fish, i stopped watching.

andrew sullivan has a concise wrap-up of online reactions. at this point, it appears the court will uphold prop 8.
