and just when i thought i had that monkey off my back. from the top: norman moses, ray jivoff, mark kaplan, and moi in "the cocoanuts" in 1991, at the old skylight on jefferson. i had a great bit with a pencil in my forehead (high-larious), norman shilled for donations for the new theatre, asking the audience to leave checks made out to "create a skylight home, or c.a.s.h." on his dressing table, and ray carried mark and i around on his back. oh, and ray didn't talk. heaven.

How well I recall the scene in "The Cocoanuts" during the dinner party when I would regularly lose it laughing (explosive chortling) at you 4, and how you put the FUN in FUNd-raising...

Loved this show - saw it many times and never failed to laugh my behind off. The casting was absolutely perfect including Sue Gottschalk as Mrs. Potter. What a bunch of zanies. This picture surely embodies the spirit of SOT - definitely having FUN!

ReplyDeleteHey Tony. I was asked to play the Zeppo role for Night in Ukraine. I know now I had some big shoes to fill. I was so happy Bill and Pam had faith in me to take on that role. How proud I felt. I am also proud to stand with everyone in our struggle to right everything. Thanks for all the updates and your dedication with this ongoing battle.

My memory of "The Cocoanuts" is being home from college, attending a rehearsal, and find Harpo's leg in my hand. I had not met Ray before that, and frankly, I'm still afraid of him.
Hey Tony! I have been following this saga from afar (thank you, Diane) in wonder and disbelief. It has been many years since I worked there, and I certainly witnessed other difficult times, but this takes the cake. I am moved by the outpouring of strength of this community of artists and patrons. Seeing this photo of 'The Cocoanuts' reminded me of wanting to watch every rehearsal, rather than working on my part of the show! Also, the thrill of moving into the new theater.
