the contingency plans

the skylight opera theatre has just put out a press release regarding the events of the last 24 hours:
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On Monday, July 20, Skylight Opera Theatre former Artistic Director Bill Theisen declined to return to the Skylight for the 2009-2010 season as a stage director. Since Theisen's resignation yesterday, eight other artists have resigned from the upcoming season - both on the mainstage and in the free cabaret series.

With this news, the Skylight is moving forward with its contingency
plans and is pleased to be having conversations with other extraordinarily talented artists to ensure the Skylight's historical success continues into the 50th Anniversary Season.

Theisen had previously accepted freelance directing positions for four productions in the 50th Anniversary Season: /The Barber of Seville, Plaid Tidings, The Marriage of Figaro/, and /The Long and The Short of It/.
not sure where godfrey and dillner keep coming up with eight. tuesdays count is now at 12.

  1. The incompetence of these people is only surpassed by their obliviousness to reality. How on earth did the Skylight fall into the hands of such nitwits?

  2. Perhaps this is how they handle things down south.

  3. I think that the monitoring of the situation will soon catch up with the actual situation in sheer ridiculousness.

The people remaining (at Skylight), however much we may disapprove, have a job to do. Why make fun of them for doing it? Either they will find people to direct, conduct, choreograph and appear in the season, or the Board will admit their mistakes and make changes.

It seems really silly to me to criticize each and every word they utter. A little Golden Rule might go a long way here.

  4. JK, I by no means meant to make fun of the people still working at the Skylight. I have a huge amount of sympathy for them in this extremely difficult situation. I also understand that in many cases, their financial circumstances make it difficult for them to speak out. My comments were directed specifically at the Executive committee, Eric Dilner, and his small band of followers on the sixth floor, who, Golden Rule or not, absolutely need to be called out on their serious and consistent errors of judgement.

  5. Tony, where did you get this? It's not on their website.

  6. Exactly, Paul. To borrow an old AIDS activism slogan "Silence = Death" and to ask that ANY supporter of the ideals that Skylight once stood for to remain quiet is unreasonable and unacceptable.

This will NOT go away. The egoes of Dillner & Hefty are not louder than the passions of those who wish to see the right thing done. They brought this about themselves and now must live with the consequences.

  7. I may be wrong, but how many extraordinarily talented artist are out there that haven't commited to next season someplace else. It would seem to me Eric is blowing smoke up someones ---. I would think there would be a few but not enough proven talent to replace the ever growing list. Look they have canceled side shows that help promote and bring interest to the big ones.

  8. Anonymous implies that Eric Dillner may be lying. Not possible.

  9. Perhaps they fill the holes in the boat and make it through this season... but I wonder how someone like Mr. Dillner, who seems to have squandered every bit of goodwill Milwaukee gave him upon his arrival, I wonder how he will raise money in these difficult economic times. I mean, people are looking to cut back, and I fear Mr. Dillner is provding ample reasons to not donate to the Skylight with each passing day.

  10. Do you realize it has gone from "Theisen fired" to "Theisen resigned?"

  11. The Skylight webpage has the following listed under "Auditions": There are currently no auditions scheduled for Skylight Opera Theatre

Some contingency plans you got there.

  12. Eric also has stated that he has new leads for donations. Why wasn't he getting these before he let all this happen? I find it hard to believe someone would give at this point instead of waiting to see how this shakes out.

  13. So no auditions, that must mean these people are just Eric's friends. So it will be Friends and Family Night at the Skylight.
