“The mere description of these pictures is horrendous enough, take my word for it."so says major general antonio taguba, the former army officer who conducted the 2004 inquiry into the prison at abu ghraib. taguba retired in january 2007 and says he supports president barack obama's decision to not release the additional photos.
taguba is correct. the descriptions alone are horrendous.
I dunno, maybe seeing the pics would inflame us too. Maybe it would inflame us enough to prosecute the architects and executors of these atrocities, and to take the steps to make sure it never happens again. As it is, they remain a fairy tale, a ghost story, the unimagined truth.
ReplyDeleteAnd there's a part of me that resents being treated like I "can't handle the truth" as Jack Nicholson put it. Yes, Maj. General Taguba I can handle the truth. You cannot simultaneously protect us from those who would harm us while "protecting" us from the atrocities committed to keep us safe from those harms.
I want to know what was done in my name.
