the newly named stephen sondheim theatre (formerly henry miller's theatre) operated by roundabout theatre company, will receive an official unveiling and lighting ceremony wednesday, september 15 at 6:30 p.m.
Broadway theatres are named and renamed, to quote Playbill.com, "because time continually marches on, and yesterday's famous Broadway personality become today's nonentity."
Henry Miller's Theatre was built and named for actor-producer Henry Miller in 1918. Since then it's also been called the Park-Miller, the Avon-at-the-Hudson (when it was a porn theater), The Xenon (when it was a disco in the 70's), the Kit Kat Club (when a revival of Cabaret was playing there) and again Henry Miller's Theatre when Urintown opened there in 2001.
The original interior of the theatre has been demolished and rebuilt, all that reamins is the facade.
I'm thinking that I will show my geekiness and head on down there on Wed. for the lighting. It isn't every day a theatre gets new signage.
